What changed
Every release, in the order it shipped. What each one still does not do is on it too, since finding that out after paying is worse than reading it here.
0.1.0 First Cut
New
- Recording - Record your screen at its own full resolution, from a floating panel that shows the display, camera and microphone about to be used, and counts down three seconds before it starts
- A face track - Record your face on your phone at 4K and drop it in; cutkit lines the two recordings up by their sound
- Editing by transcript - Every word is on screen with the cut ones struck through, dragging across words strikes or restores them, and the player skips what is cut so you hear the edit rather than the take
- Cuts made for you - Silence, filler sounds and false starts come out on their own, and the plan says how many seconds each rule took
- Retakes - When a line was said more than once, cutkit can be asked which attempt to keep, and it says why in a few words
- Notes - Pin a reaction to a moment, and optionally to a spot on the frame, so a second pass has somewhere to start
- Taste - Turn a preference into a rule that applies to every project after it, like cutting a word you always say or holding on your face a little longer
- Script - Write what you are going to say in the app, in blocks, saved beside the recording as plain markdown you can read off a phone
- Motion - Zoom and the screen and face layout are planned from how densely you are speaking, never pushed past the point where the picture would soften
- Delivery - Render a finished master at up to 2160p with the loudness levelled, or export a timeline that opens in DaVinci Resolve, Premiere or Final Cut with every cut already made
- Projects that sync - A project is a folder, safe to keep in Dropbox or Drive with somebody else in it, and two people editing at once cannot lose each other's work
- Licensing - $79 once for a perpetual licence, good on two Macs, with twelve months of updates and the version you have working after that
Known limitations
- A take carries either your voice or the screen's own sound, not both, and which one it is is stated before you record and again at review
- A word shorter than a quarter of a second is left in place, because a cut aimed at one that short lands on its neighbours instead
- A filler can keep a fragment of itself when the silence in the recording starts a little after the word does
- The retake pass only asks about lines that share enough words to look like two attempts at the same thing, so a retake phrased completely differently is left alone
- A retake is kept or dropped whole, so a better take that opens with a false start needs that start struck by hand
- The app is around 400MB, most of it the recognition and rendering pipeline that ships inside it so that nothing has to be installed alongside it
- Licence and sign-in email is not being delivered yet, pending one verification step with the mail provider. A purchase still mints a licence and it is still on your account page
- Removing a Mac from the app's own Licence pane needs the site redeployed before it answers. The account page on the site can free a slot in the meantime
